Dogs at Work

Today was my first day on a new full-time job. Being a middle-aged, single lady trying to support myself, my dog, and my voracious crafting addiction I have taken on a day job so that I can survive and still do what speaks to my soul. I know it won't be easy simply because there are only so many hours in a day. I also know how fortunate I am to be able to do both. But still....I was a bit apprehensive. It's been a rough year. Some of you may know that in the past year I have moved across country from California to Missouri, gotten divorced, and have now moved (just two weeks ago) to my second rental home. (Can anyone tell me why so little fits into sooooo many boxes!?) In the past year I've had 4 different part-time jobs in an effort to keep Best Friends Studios my number one priority, but alas it wasn't a secure enough place for me to stay. So goodbye to the part-times and hello to my new full-time gig. This new part of my life is an office job...no artsy-fartsy skills necessary. In some ways it's a really good thing. It doesn't take all that creative energy away from me during the day but definitely pays for the groceries and rent (a very comforting feeling.) This year and my new job have taken their toll on my best friend and business partner however. She's the one that's been holding it altogether and running the whole show over at Best Friends Studios. Without her, none of you would have heard from us at all this past year. She's the glue, the brains, and the hours behind our beautiful and successful business and website. Please make sure all of you see her wonderful new spring designs. But I digress....

So back to today....first full-day....away from Best Friends Studios and my little love Shaetze. I didn't know what to expect, so what a wonderful surprise it was to be greeted at the door by a grumbling, beautiful, dog named Maggie. She didn't quite know what to make of me until she sniffed me and found the smell of my schnauzer all over me. I knew the day was off to a good start. Everyone should have a dog to greet them at work. I think the world would be a happier place! I know she made the office a happier place for me to be today.

I love switching things up for changing seasons and holidays. I shuffle plates in and out of my extensive collection of Fiesta®Ware so our kitchen is color-coordinated for Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter, spring, summer, etc. So it's no surprise that I like my envelopes to reflect the season with holiday-themed dog breed address labels. Dachshund Rescue of North America

Stray Rescue of St. Louis

Stray Rescue of St. Louis is an amazing dog and cat welfare organization here in St. Louis. They do phenomenal work taking care of this city's injured, abandoned, abused, and stray dogs and cats. They are a no-kill shelter which takes in these unfortunate animals, gives them medical care, and then rehabilitates them in hopes of placing them in loving homes. Randy Grim, the Founder of Stray Rescue, and his crew go out daily searching the streets of St. Louis armed with food and a tremendous amount of love. Please check out strayrescue.org for all of the details of their work.

And just a reminder that from now until Valentine's Day, Best Friends Studios will be donating 10% of all sales to Stray Rescue, a wonderful no-kill shelter in St. Louis. The winter months are particularly rough on homeless dogs and cats. Stray Rescue volunteers take to the streets to rescue and feed these animals who are literally left out in the cold. Celebrate National Letter Writing Week

The other day my daughter complained that she never got any "real" mail (you know, the paper kind in a handwritten envelope delivered by your friendly postal carrier). She's right to complain. Due to the electronic conveniences of email, texting, tweeting and Facebook—not to mention our hectic, harried lives—it seems as if no one puts pen to paper these days.

I find the absence of handwritten letters in our lives rather sad. Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating ditching our electronic communication tools, but I do wish more people would take the time to write a physical letter once in awhile. Not only are handwritten letters more personal, they preserve and provide an historical snapshot of our 21st century lives. (When's the last time you saved an email or text from a friend?)

Which is why I was happy to learn about National Letter Writing Week, an unofficial week-long event celebrated from January 9-15, 2011, that promotes writing letters. One blog I read recommended addressing and stamping five envelopes, then writing to one person each day. Letter recipients include friends you've lost contact with, a soldier overseas or someone you love. If your kids are hungry for some "real" mail, try one of these pen pal programs: Amazing Kids! Penpals Program ($10/child); Kids Helping Kids; or Student Letter Exchange ($1.25/child). Above all, have fun with this! Who knows? Letter writing might become your new hobby! Ellen

DAY TWENTY-FIVE: 25 Days of New Designs

DAY TWENTY-FIVE: Phew. I have to admit that 25 Days of New Designs really wore me out. It was tough coming up with new ideas in the midst of trying to produce orders for customers during the busy holiday season. While I didn't complete all of my designs in 25 consecutive days as planned, I did finish up the challenge with, not 25, but 50 new designs under my belt! I found that once I'd sit down and start working on one design, other ideas and concepts would start flowing, which is why I ended up with more than 25 new designs. In fact, the exercise was so successful that I may continue challenging myself on a weekly basis to get at least one new design out there.

And now I have a bit of sad news to start the new year. Yesterday, we lost a furry family member. My daughter's guinea pig, Teddy, finally succumbed to cancer. He leaves behind his brother, Rocky, who we hope will be OK without the companionship of his brother. Teddy was gentle little pig and we will miss hearing him squeak when the fridge door opens (parsley & carrot time). The above photo of Teddy and Elena was taken five years ago when Teddy was almost 2 years old. Rest in peace, Teddy. Ellen

DAY TWENTY-FOUR: 25 Days of New Designs

DAY TWENTY-FOUR: Since bookmarks are one of the most requested products I get at Best Friends Studios, I decided to see what I could come up with for the second to last day of my 25 Days of New Designs challenge. Though I'm still tweaking this design (I'd like to add a tassel or ribbon at the top), I do like how this multiple dog pattern turned out. I'm pretty rough on bookmarks so I decided to use an ultra-thick laminating pouch similar to our luggage tags. Look for this and other bookmarks on the site in upcoming weeks. DAY TWENTY-THREE: Our dogs love a good romp in the snow, though according to my kids, the St. Louis region doesn't get near enough precipitation to make winter fun. In the hope (for my kids' sake!) that we get at least one decent snow day this winter, I've created a new category of address labels called Winter Fun. DAY TWENTY-TWO: I know we haven't even gotten through the Christmas holidays, but in this business, we have to think ahead. For Day 22 of 25 Days of New Designs, I put together the first of what I hope will be a fun collection of canine-inspired stationery for Valentine's Day. The Pawsitively Awesome photo card is one I did for my daughter last year to pass out to classmates. The response from the kids and parents was so positive that I decided to put it on the Best Friends Studios site this year along with coordinating labels. I think it would be cute for kids or adults so dig up the cutest photo of your dog or cat and consider sending your friends personalized Valentines this year. I'll be adding more stationery to our Valentine's Day Collection during the next few weeks...stay tuned!

DAY NINETEEN: Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas, surrounded by both human and animal loved ones! Here in St. Louis we experienced a beautiful white Christmas...the first I can recall in years. Now that the flurry of shopping, baking and entertaining has come to an end, I'm back at the drawing board to finish 25 Days of New Designs. After today's design, I'll have just six more to complete by New Year's Day...yippee! I had so much fun with the first design of "Cats in Play" that I decided to do another one in the same vein. Bordered with a scalloped edge, this design features two mischievous kittens stalking a praying mantis and, like A Cat & Mouse Game note cards/note pads, is available in six colors: Coal Black, Bright Berry, Tangerine, Baby Blue, Pink Whisper or Citron Lime. DAY SEVENTEEN: Despite my best intentions, I've missed several days 25 Days of New Designs. But as Mary Ann wisely and very kindly pointed out, most days I've created more than one design so I'm actually ahead of the game. An appealing line of reasoning I can latch onto, especially as I scramble to finish up my Christmas shopping! On this 17th Day of my crazy creative pilgrimage, I designed our family's holiday greeting card. The photo is courtesy of Mary Ann and was taken this summer in my garden when things were lush and green! I played a little with the back of the card, adding a paw print above our company name & a tiny photo of our cat (who did not care to participate in our photo shoot last summer). Now if I can just round up everyone's address, I just might get these in the mail before Christmas Eve!

DAY SIXTEEN: One of my hobbies (and Mary Ann's) is collecting vintage paper items. Together, we both have boxes of postcards, old magazines, ephemera and vintage photographs. Of course our favorite images are those that include dogs! For our 16th Day of 25 Days of New Designs, I sorted through my stash of dog photographs for images that would make nice greeting cards. After scanning them at nearly triple their original size, I set to work in Adobe Photoshop, correcting the chips, scratches and imperfections that occur most often with older photos (these I estimate to be at least 60 years old). Restoring old photos takes time but the results are worth it. A little color correction and the addition of a sepia tint and I had two charming greeting cards: Boy & Foxhound and Wire Fox Terrier With Boy. Both cards can be customized with your choice of greeting on the front (Happy Birthday, Thinking of You, Etc.) and an optional message inside.

DAY FOURTEEN: For Day 14 of 25 Days of New Designs, I tackled a project for Best Friends Studios that I've been procrastinating about for weeks, maybe even months! Though I realize it's a little late for this holiday season, I designed a Christmas ornament using my dog silhouettes. This large glass tile ornament incorporates vintage Christmas sheet music with your favorite dog or cat silhouette. Measuring almost 2 x 2 inches, it is strung with a slim black and red velvet ribbon. Look for more glass tile pendant projects soon…this was a fun project and I can't wait to try other designs!

Creativity Crunch Time

As many of you have seen now, Ellen is on a month-long quest to create a new product or design each day. Well all I have to say is WOW. What a tough job that is going to be. But she's doing it! This time of year is utter chaos for both of us. Trying to actually produce what we create, by ourselves, and come up with new designs and products at the same time is almost impossible. What we have trouble with is having the time. I know most of you out there are in a constant search for more time too. So you probably understand our frustration at having too many ideas and not enough day to make them all happen. What we need is a full-time staff to help us with our endeavors, but until that's possible we will plug along and do the best we can. I myself am dreaming up visions of things I want to create but they will have to wait until after the Christmas rush. This little Elf is overbooked right now!

DAY EIGHT: We've been neglecting our equine best friends lately so for Day 8 of 25 Days of New Designs, I finished up several horse themed bookplates: Prancing Horse & Collie, Friendly Horses and Horse Portrait. Each is created from a vintage postcard image and carefully restored digitally. Bookplates date back to 15th century Germany and were often pasted into the inside cover of a book in order to identify its owner. Today, I'm happy to say bookplates are making a comeback. Check out our entire collection bookplate labels...they make a great accompaniment to gifts of books.

DAY FIVE: Monday, start of new week...seemed fitting that—for Day 5 of my 25 Days of New Designs adventure—I unearth a few of my luggage tag designs that have been languishing in a drawer for the past few months. You see, I really hate photographing luggage tags. They never lie flat and there always seems to be an odd reflection on the photos. But today, I braved 30 degree temps to shoot a few of my finished tags in natural sunlight so I could finally get them on the Best Friends Studios website! (One of these days, Mary Ann and I will both learn how to use our professional lighting set-up or perhaps let my 14-year-old son try his hand at product photography!) DAY TWO: I spent the second day of 25 Days of New Designs drawing dog breed silhouettes. Though we have more than 90 silhouettes on Best Friends Studios that can be used to customize our stationery items, I still continue to receive requests for breeds not on our list. Since I've noticed quite a backlog in the canine request department, I felt it was a good task to get off my plate. After all, a big part of this challenge is my battle with procrastination!

25 Days of New Designs...The Challenge Begins

Like most creatives, Mary Ann and I are pretty full of ideas. But, though we can brainstorm with the best of them, many of our ideas seldom see the light of day. Yup, it's that little pitfall called procrastination. Consequently, we both have a slew of half-finished projects in our studios, conveniently shoved out of sight to prevent guilt from setting in. Yesterday, as I looked through my "Designs in Progress" folder, I realized I needed to create a self-imposed deadline. So, with a nod to the Julie & Julia blog/book/film that provided the inspiration for this project, I've decided to create 25 brand new designs for Best Friends Studios in just 25 days. My husband thinks I'm crazy (he's probably right) and Mary Ann has promised to pinch hit with several of her new designs if I get into a bind. Our little guy, Scamp, loves any toy with a squeaker in it, though the less durable toys are usually silenced within an hour, while our Labrador Retriever, Jasmine, is content carrying around two to three stuffed animals in her mouth (no destruction...these are her babies). I don't know about you, but every year around this time I start to panic about sending out holiday cards. Despite being in the stationery business with the ability to print my own cards, I still seem to run out of time, which is why most of my friends and family only hear from me every three or four years. Part of the problem is my perfectionist nature. When will I have time to take that perfect photo of both kids with our two dogs? Why didn't I do it this summer when my garden looked lush and the kids were out of school? And worst of all, how many shots will it take to snag one decent photo of all four subjects?

This year, I'm happy to report that my best friend and cohort in Best Friends Studios took wonderful photos of both kids along with Jasmine and Scamp so all I have to do (ha ha) is design a coordinating card, print and mail. But even though I've finally got my act together for this year's Christmas cards, I'm willing to bet there are many well-intentioned dog lovers out there who just don't have the time or energy to photograph their best friend for a holiday card.

So this past weekend, I got busy designing a new line of HOLIDAY CARDS that can be customized with one of the 90 dog breed silhouettes available for personalized stationery at Best Friends Studios. Heaven and Best Friends

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, and that the dog had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them. After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. When he was standing before it, he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother of pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side. When he was close enough, he called out, "Excuse me, where are we?"

"This is heaven, sir," the man answered.

"Wow! Would you happen to have some water?" the man asked.

"Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up." The man gestured, and the gate began to open.

"Can my friend," gesturing toward his dog, "come in, too?" the traveler asked.

"I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets."

The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going. After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road which led through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book. "Excuse me!" he called to the reader. "Do you have any water?"

"Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there" The man pointed to a place that couldn't be seen from outside the gate. "Come on in."

"How about my friend here?" the traveler gestured to the dog.

"There should be a bowl by the pump."

They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it. The traveler filled the bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog. When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree waiting for them.

"What do you call this place?" the traveler asked.

"This is heaven," was the answer.

"Well, that's confusing," the traveler said. "The man down the road said that was heaven, too."

"Oh, you mean the place with the gold streets and pearly gates? Nope. That's hell."

"Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?"

"No. I can see how you might think so, but we're just happy that they screen out the folks who'll leave their best friends behind."

Rare New Guinea Singing Dogs

You have may seen the recent news story about a man who was caught with approximately 80 New Guinea Singing Dogs at his home in Franklin County Pennsylvania. Regarded as the rarest dog breed in the world, the New Guinea Singing Dog (NGSD) is aptly named due to its distinctive howl. Like many people, I'd never even heard of the New Guinea Singing Dog! With pricked ears and bushy tail, the NGSD resembles a fox in appearance and is not recommended as domesticated pet. According to DogBreedInfo.com, the NGSD's complex vocal behavior includes yelps, whines, single-note howls and the ability to vary the pitch of its howl. Check out their concert in the video below. Good News for Missouri's Dogs!

Yesterday was a good day for dogs in Missouri. Nearly 1 million voters helped to pass Proposition B here in Missouri. We apparently have been known as the puppy mill capital of the country with no laws in place to govern the care of dogs in these large-scale commercial breeding facilities. Now all that has changed. The estimated 3,000 puppy mills that exist will be required to provide each dog under their care with sufficient food, clean water, housing and space; necessary veterinary care; regular exercise; and adequate rest between breeding cycles. The measure also prohibits any breeder from having more than 50 breeding dogs for the purpose of selling their puppies as pets and creates a misdemeanor crime of 'puppy mill cruelty' for any violations.

So thanks to all those Missourians who got out and voted! You have done a wonderful thing.

Acorn Dangers to Dogs

I was surprised to find that the beautiful Oak Tree may actually pose a danger to our dogs. This time of year here, if you have one of these shady trees, you can have almost as many acorns carpeting your backyard as you do their leaves. According to the ASPCA website, the acorn contains gallotannin which, depending on the amount eaten, can cause gastrointestinal upsets in pets and other animals. Symptoms can include cramps, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), and kidney failure. Some dogs may even suffer with seizures. Obviously if the acorn is swallowed whole it has the potential to block the intestines, but the real threat comes when they are chewed. This releases more of the toxin. The hard outer shell contains the most gallotannin and green acorns contain more of it than the brown. Even when oak buds, bark, leaves, and drinking water that oak leaves have soaked in can cause illness in dogs. Small amounts may only cause mild illness but in severe cases, dogs have died of kidney failure from eating acorns.

So keep an eye on all your little furry friends when they venture outside this fall, especially if they like to investigate all kinds of little curious chewable objects.

Walk for Pups to Help Yes! on Prop B Campaign

Even if you don't live in the state of Missouri, chances are you've heard about our puppy mills. We wear the embarrassing badge of shame as the "Puppy Mill Capital of America." During the past year, many animal lovers in Missourians worked tirelessly, gathering more than 190,000 signatures to place a measure on the November 2010 statewide ballot, which will end some of the worst abuses at puppy mills. The Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act is a measure that will improve the lives of dogs in commercial breeding operations in Missouri. Specifically, the measure will require large-scale dog breeding operations to provide each breeding dog under their care with the basics of humane animal care including:

Sufficient food and clean water;
Necessary veterinary care;
Sufficient housing, including protection from the elements;
Sufficient space to turn and stretch freely, lie down, and fully extend their limbs;
Regular exercise; and
Adequate rest between breeding cycles.

With less than three weeks until the November election, the Missourians for the Protection of Dogs / YES! on Prop B campaign needs the help of dog lovers everywhere to ensure that this crucial measure passes. Last summer, our family adopted an adorable puppy who had been rescued from a Missouri puppy mill [see Scamp's story here]. Like others who have rescued a dog from one of inhumane breeding facilities, I cannot comprehend this kind of cruelty. It literally makes me ill.

I just joined the Walk for Pups event to help the Yes! on Prop B campaign and have pledged to walk at least 2 miles daily throughout October (with both dogs, of course!). ACTION NEEDED Wentzville, MO Alderman Meeting/Ban Retail Sale of Dogs/Cats

Alderman Nick Guccione who is sponsoring the ordinance to ban the retail sale of dogs and cats in Wentzville has let us know that due to some opposition to the ordinance expressed by 2 vets at the meeting a couple of his fellow aldermen have gone from supporting the ordinance to having some doubts. Nick has asked that we send in emails to the mayor and board expressing how much we support this issue and if we can get a lot of emails including some from well-known people (athletes, business owners, civic leaders, etc.) he can use that to convince those "on the fence" to vote yes.

I am asking you to send an email and forward this to anyone else (including business owners, community leaders, athletes, and so on) who might be willing to help. Nick would like to be able to present these emails to the board at the next meeting,the evening of Wednesday, August 25, so please try to get them to him before then. The issue is not on that meeting's agenda so Nick has asked that we send the emails instead of attending the meeting and he will hopefully be able to get the issue on following meeting's agenda.

Please address your emails to "Wentzville Mayor and Board of Aldermen" or something along those lines to show it is meant for all and email to ald1w3@wentzvillemo.org.

Friday the 13th: Cat Superstitions

I'm not really a superstitious kind of gal, though I will admit to consciously walking around a ladder rather than beneath it on occasion. But since today is Friday the 13th, I thought it would be fun to debunk some of the superstitious mythology associated with cats.

THE CAT AS A METEOROLOGIST
According to numerous cultures, cats can predict when it will rain. Cat washing behind its ears? Rain's on the way. Cat looking out the window? Rain's on the way. Cat sneezes? Rain's on the way. Pupil of cat's eye broadens? You guessed it...rain's on the way. In addition, a cat sitting with all four paws tucked under means bad weather is coming. Lastly, if your cat is frisky or clawing at the carpet, it will be windy.

LUCKY KITTIES
Of course, we all know that cats, especially black ones, have long been associated with luck.

In North America, it's bad luck if a black cat crosses your path and good luck if a white cat crosses your path (unless it's at night whereas you'll have bad luck). In Britain and Ireland, it's the opposite.
But to reverse the bad luck curse of a black cat crossing your path, first walk in a circle, then go backward across the spot where it happened and count to 13.
A cat sneezing is a good omen for everyone who hears it. Wait a second, I thought that meant rain was on the way...

IN YOUR DREAMS
I typically don't dream about felines but maybe I should...

Small Dogs Prove Susceptible to Flea Poison

Warning that the powerful poisons can endanger dogs and cats, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will require new instructions and labeling for on-spot flea products.

The products, including the popular Frontline and Advantage brands, are small vials of liquid pesticides that pet owners apply monthly to the backs of dogs or cats to kill fleas and ticks. The EPA began investigating the products after discovering a sharp rise in the number of pets reported to be sick after they were treated.

The yearlong investigation, conducted by a team of veterinarians assembled by the federal agency, concluded that certain pets – small dogs between 10 and 20 pounds – are most susceptible to the problems, which include rashes, vomiting, diarrhea and seizures.

EPA Assistant Administrator Steve Owens said Wednesday that no products are being banned at this point, but “we’re going to be watching the situation very closely.”

New instructions and warnings are expected on product labels within the next several months. If these steps don’t reduce the problems, “we will take more significant action. We will remove products from the market if we have to,” Owens said.

Fleas and ticks can cause discomfort and diseases for many dogs and cats around the country. As a result, the on-spot treatments are commonly recommended by veterinarians.

Many pet owners who use the treatments think they are applying medication to their pet, but they actually are treating them with potent pesticides, including permethrin, which also is used to kill pests on crops and yards.

“These are poisons that we are applying to our pets,” said Owens, who said it is a personal as well as a professional issue for him because he owns two dogs and three cats. “Pet owners should exercise caution.”

Incidents reported by consumers who used the products on their pets rose from 28,895 in 2007 to 44,263 in 2008, an increase of 53 percent in one year.

Most of the problems were minor, such as skin rashes, but about 600 dogs and cats died in the incidents reported in 2008, EPA records show.

Chihuahuas, shih tzus, miniature poodles, Pomeranians and dachshunds had the most reported incidents, according to the EPA report released Wednesday. For products containing cyphenothrin, those breeds accounted for 33 percent of the reported problems. For products containing permethrin, shih tzus, bichon frise, chihuahuas, yorkshire terriers and maltese were involved in more than 25 percent of the incidents. K-9 Advantix for Dogs contains permethrin and some Sergeant's products and Sentry's Pro XFC contain cyphenothrin.

“Small breed dogs were more commonly affected with the number of incidents out of proportion to their popularity,” the EPA report says.

The problem might be the dose. The agency is telling manufacturers to narrow the range of weights identified for their products.

“We will make clear that certain products cannot be used on smaller animals,” Owens said.

In addition, the investigation found that cats were sickened when products intended for dogs were used on them. Permethrin is particularly dangerous for cats and is not used in any on-spot treatments for cats.

EPA officials said they will meet with each manufacturer individually to go over the changes that the agency wants, such as more precise instructions regarding the proper dosage for pets’ various weights. Also, markings should distinguish better between cat products and dog products, and similar brand names will not be allowed for both. New labels also would advise people to keep cats away from treated dogs for a period of time.

2 Legged Miracle

One of my lovely customers Valerie, forwarded this amazing story to me, so here it goes....

This dog was born on Christmas Eve in the year 2002. He was born with 2 legs. He of course could not walk when he was born. His first owner didn't think that he could survive and he was thinking of putting him to sleep. But then, his present owner, Jude Stringfellow, met him and wanted to take care of him. She became determined to teach and train this little dog to walk by himself. She named him 'Faith.'

In the beginning, she put Faith on a surfboard to let him feel the movement. Later she used peanut butter on a spoon as a lure and reward for him for standing up and jumping around. Amazingly, only after 6 months, Faith learned to balance on his hind legs and to jump to move forward. After further training in the snow, he could now walk like a human being.

Faith's owner is determined to teach the world that "even without a perfect body, one can have a perfect soul." In life there are always undesirable things, so in order to feel better sometimes you just need to look at life from another direction.

Beagles Rescued from NJ Cosmetics Lab

PORT JEFFERSON STATION, NY (WPIX) - According to animal rescue

officials, over 100 beagles were rescued from an abandoned

cosmetics laboratory in Warren County, New Jersey earlier this

week and they're now looking for new homes.

The beagles were being used for pharmaceutical and chemical tests

at the lab, officials said.

In a strange twist of fate the dogs were saved in part by the bad

economy after the company that owned the lab filed for bankruptcy.

"They closed the laboratory down and left the dogs inside," said

Lynne Schoepfer, Executive Director of Save-A-Pet in Port Jefferson

Station.

The animal rescue organization, along with several other rescue

groups, stepped in and saved 120 beagles in all.

"It was basically a make up company so they were doing inhalation

tests on them, not all of them were tested, not sure which ones

were and which ones weren't."

The rescue groups determined that the dogs spent their entire

lives in steel cages.

Officials say there is no way of telling if the animals have internal

damage from the chemical exposure, but they appear to be in

good shape, sniffing away and active which indicates good lung

capacity.

The beagles, which were spayed and neutered, were up for adoption

Friday.

"I think they'll make great pets all of them come up to you

looking for affection," said Schoepfer.

Fresh Air Fund Needs Host Families

In 2009, The Fresh Air Fund's Volunteer Host Family program, called Friendly Town, gave close to 5,000 New York City boys and girls, ages six to 18, free summer experiences in the country and the suburbs. Volunteer host families shared their friendship and homes up to two weeks or more in 13 Northeastern states from Virginia to Maine and Canada.

The Fresh Air Fund relies on donations to provide memorable summers to NYC children.

THE FRESH AIR FUND, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer vacations to more than 1.7 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Nearly 10,000 New York City children enjoy free Fresh Air Fund programs annually. In 2008, close to 5,000 children visited volunteer host families in suburbs and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada. 3,000 children also attended five Fresh Air camps on a 2,300-acre site in Fishkill, New York. The Fund’s year-round camping program serves an additional 2,000 young people each year.

Missouri’s Dirty Little Secret

As a dog lover, I'm more than a little embarrassed that I live in the "Puppy Mill Capital of the Nation." According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Missouri had 1,525 commercial breeders in 2008. This is nearly triple the number claimed by second-place Oklahoma, while most states claim fewer than 50 breeders...see Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation (MAAL) map.

So I was happy to learn of new campaign to get the Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act on the November ballot in Missouri. Spearheaded by Missourians for the Protection of Dogs, this citizen-sponsored state ballot initiative will prevent tens of thousands of dogs from suffering due to the cruel and inhumane environments present in puppy mills. The measure will limit the number of breeding dogs per facility and requires large-scale facilities to provide the basics of humane animal care. You know, stuff like sufficient food and clean water, veterinary care, protection from the elements. (More details of the statute.)

Like many people, I have a tough time understanding how anyone would NOT provide such basics to an innocent animal. And one would think that most people with even an ounce of compassion wouldn't think twice about signing a petition like this. Yet this weekend as I signed the petition at our local recreation complex, one man walked by with this lovely comment: "I'll show you what you can do with your puppies." Obviously not a dog lover.

The campaign needs more than 100,000 signatures by April 27, 2010, in order to get this initiative on the ballot. Visit the Missourians for the Protection of Dogs website to find out how you can help or to find an upcoming signature gathering event. A Doggy Valentine's Day

I'm feeling a little sad tonight. For the past eight or nine years, my kids and I have spent the night before their elementary school Valentine's Day party frantically putting the final touches on our homemade cards. But this is my daughter's last year at the elementary school, which means no more holiday parties and no more class valentines.

We've created our own valentines all but one year when I decided the heck with all this chaos the night before and instead let the kids purchase the typical commercial packs that you find at places like Wal-Mart and Target. But the cards were made so cheaply that I could never bring myself to buy them again. Through the years we've made butterflies with candy sticks, Smarties rockets, lollipop flowers and Valentine mice (FamilyFun has a ton of creative ideas). Since starting Best Friends Studios, I've steered the kids toward doggy-theme valentines that showcase photos of either Jasmine or Scamp. So for our last big batch of valentines, Elena took a cute photo of Scamp for her card. Happy Valentine's Day...spread a little love this weekend! Ellen

Mardi Gras Dogs & Others

Sunday was the annual Beggin' Strips Barkus Pet Parade held in the historic district of Soulard in St. Louis, Misssouri. The event was benefiting the Open Door Animal Sanctuary, a no kill shelter in Jefferson County. The parade was a huge success with Soulard's Mardi Gras streets jam packed with dogs of all sizes and even a goat, horse, and several cats thrown in for fun! Every year, Mardi Gras is celebrated throughout the streets of Soulard with a month long celebration of food, drink, and revelry....and of course our furry friends have to get in on the act. Questionable Bones, Throwing Up, and Vet Bills

In the wee hours of Monday morning, Shaetze nor I got much sleep. Between bouts of vomiting, Shaetze was shivering from undoubtedly painful stomach cramps. As I lay awake sick to death with worry and unable to comfort my little guy, I kept wondering what on earth could have caused this trauma. It was that bone I gave him last night, I just knew it. It came from a reputable store and was packaged so nicely for our four legged friends that I had no doubt it was safe. I have no proof of course because it could have been anything the little scavenger had come across in the yard. So as soon as the Vet opened Monday morning, he was off to be healed. Sure enough, he was fighting an infection and not until they gave him antibiotics did he start to show signs of improvement. The vet is sure that it was something he had eaten. It got me thinking about all the things that can make a dog sick that I might not be aware of like fatty meats, grapes, garlic, or avocados. Some of these ingredients can even be found in food that is specifically produced for dogs. Sometimes though it is the amount, or the form that these seemingly innocent ingredients come in that can wreck havoc on an animal's stomach. Adrienne Carlson has compiled a list of "25 Common Foods That Can Be Toxic for Your Pet" over on her blog Veterinary Technician Schools Online. It's a must read for any pet owner. You might be surprised at some of the foods included in this list.

Shaetze is better by the way. We still don't know exactly what he got into and whether it was the dog bone or not, but you can be sure I'll be watching him like a hawk!

Pill Popping for Dogs

Anyone who has ever had a dog has surely, at some point, had to administer a pill or two for medical reasons. I've always gone the "hide the pill in food" route. My vet recommended using the stinkiest food around because those incredible noses will always sniff out a lurking pill. My "go to" food has always been Braunschweiger which actually has worked beautifully for all of the pups in my life...until now. I don't know about your little friends but my Schaetze has become a master of artfully chewing his way around the pill and then promptly spitting it out, clean as a whistle, on to the floor. In my search for a more effective method of delivery, I happened upon "Pill Pockets" from the Greenies company. They work like a charm. They too are stinky, but I think their malodorous sent is more potent than Braunschweiger's. What ever their secret is, they have worked for me and I couldn't be any happier! Choosing the Best Food for Your Dog

About a year ago, our 5-year-old yellow lab developed a horrible case of chronic, quite smelly gas. Though Jasmine had experienced sporadic bouts with gas in the past, it now had morphed into an everyday occurance. She was literally clearing out rooms! Since our vet couldn't pinpoint any health problems that might cause excessive flatulence, he suggested we try other dog foods.

For years, Jasmine had been eating what I thought was a top-rated, organic dog food. But like humans, every dog's system is unique. As my vet said, what agrees with my neighbor's lab might be a gastronomical nightmare for Jasmine. So the search began.

We buy our food from a wonderful independent pet store in St. Louis called the Canine Center. Before heading in there, however, I decided to research dog food online. I found quite a few sites with dog food reviews but the best of the bunch was Dog Food Analysis, an independent site that provides detailed information on more than 1,500 dry dog foods, along with ratings and reviews. (They also review canned dog food but I was interested in dry food.)

The review section of Dog Food Analysis is broken down into six categories ranging from the top-rated 6 Star Premium Dry Food to the not-so-great 1 Star Dry Food. Of course, I started in the premium categories. After reading profiles/reviews on several of the dog foods, I headed to RateItAll.com to read what dog owners had to say about the foods I was considering. While the Rate It All site did not include overviews about the nutritional content of dog food, its huge collection of consumer reviews provided me with more than enough feedback to decide what food to try first.

Armed with the knowledge that I was not blindly choosing just any dog food for Jasmine, I ended up purchasing Now! Petcurean Dog Food. And like magic, Jasmine's gas problem has all but disappeared. There are many great dog foods out there, but Now! worked best for us. If I hadn't done my research before heading to the pet store, we probably would have gone through several trials before settling on a food that worked. Used together, the Dog Food Analysis and Rate It All sites can help dog owners make more educated decisions about what to put in their dogs' mouths.

Why People Don't Fix Their Pets

Every once in awhile, I run across a statistic that blows my mind. According to a recent article in USA Today, 48% of unsterilized animals acquired in the past year were not neutered or spayed. I guess I'm naive, but with all the PR about pet overpopulation, puppy mills and euthanization, I assumed that these numbers were much lower. Apparently, I'm in good company because according to the article, a whopping 62% of those surveyed between 18-34 years of age estimated that animal shelters euthanize less than 1 million animals annually. (Reality Check: The Humane Society puts that estimate at 4 million annually.)

So why don't people spay or neuter their pets?

The top answer (34%) was "pet is too young." So at six months old, it's OK for your dog to get pregnant and have a litter of puppies but not OK for a routine surgical procedure?
Thirty-one percent surveyed responded that sterilization was "too expensive." I don't buy this excuse, either, since there are so many low-cost spay and neuter programs available through local shelters. In addition, sterilization is usually included in the price of adopting an animal from a shelter.
Which leads us to the next excuse (24%): "haven't gotten around to it." That's great. I'll bet you'll get around to dropping off your pet's unwanted offspring at the shelter.
The remaining responses ("didn't feel it was necessary," "it's not natural," "concerned about impact on pet's personality," "it would deprive pet of natural life") simply show us how much more work and education is needed to improve our spaying and neutering numbers.

OK, I'm off my soapbox for today! But please, spay or neuter your pet. It's the kindest thing you can do for him or her! Ellen

Earthquakes

Having just recently moved from a state that earthquakes seem to be a common experience in, the largest quake I ever experienced in California was only a 5.8. Scary enough but obviously nothing like what the people of Haiti have experienced. Their quake was registered at 7.0. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Richter Scales ratings, each time an earthquake's magnitude increases by one point it causes 32 times more energy to be released. So not only was Haiti's earthquake exponentially more devastating because of the power of the quake, it has been devastating because of the inadequate (if even existent) earthquake prepared buildings. The fact that Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world has helped to make the Haitians extremely vulnerable to a natural disaster of this kind. Their buildings were completely unprepared for this kind of quake in part because the country lacks the funds to construct buildings with adequate infrastructure to withstand (or at least not disintegrate from) earthquakes. We are very fortunate here in the US that this is not the case for those who live in the most earthquake prone areas of this country. We are lucky. The Haitians are not. So my heart goes out to all of those who are suffering such tremendous loss in Haiti. May they all be in our prayers.

Coming Home

After 20 years, I have made a move back to my home state of Missouri. Of course my timing is impeccable as I have chosen the coldest winter in 10 years to come home! My friends in California wonder what I was thinking too since it's been in the 70's and 80's there the last couple of weeks. But I'm home and getting settled in. I love being closer to my "Best Friend" and business partner in crime and her children and husband. They have been such a blessing to be with. She and her family opened up their home to me until I found a place of my own to stay. Which was a huge sacrifice for them especially since I came with all my sewing equipment! I think they are still finding pieces of felt and thread all over their home. I also love being closer to my brother and his family. I'm finally having an opportunity to be part of my 4 nieces' and 1 nephew's lives on a more regular basis which has been a blast. (I've been rock climbing and ice skating and for a 45 year old, it's been a bit painful but so much fun!) And I'm getting to spend time with my sister-in-law and her mom too.

Of course I miss my "family" in California. All of them will always have a HUGE place in my heart. And heck, I couldn't have a better place to go visit when I want to escape the 13 degree weather we are having in STL!

You can put your own dog(s) to the test by administering The Animal Attraction's Dog IQ Test. The test consists of six activities that, according to The Animal Attraction, will tell you "whether your canine should go to Harvard or just stay asleep on the couch." First Person: Inside a St. Louis Pit Bull Shelter

The Humane Society of Missouri recently received permanent custody of a large percentage of the dogs and puppies that were rescued last July in the nation's largest dogfighting raid. The above video clip shares a bit of what these poor animals endured. It pretty much broke my heart seeing the "tools of the trade" used by these less than human dog fighting "trainers." The one hopeful aspect of this story is that more than 100 dogs have been placed in foster homes after being successful rehabilitated. Most of these pit bulls had been so badly abused that the rescue groups originally thought only 5-10% could be rehabilitated. Pet lovers in the St. Louis Metro region will be heading to the Saint Louis Pet Expo on Saturday, October 24, at the St. Charles Convention Center. With a focus on rescue groups, this FREE event will feature adoptions, agility demonstations, training tips, pet products and more than 100 exhibitors. The Expo will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (free admission and parking).

Over the weekend, I got busy and created a batch of new dog silhouettes for Best Friends Studios. New breeds for our personalized stationery items include the Belgian Tervuren, Long Haired Dachshund, Wire Haired Dachshund, Irish Water Spaniel, Japanese Chin, Miniature Pinscher, Norfolk Terrier, Saint Bernard, Schipperke and Whippet. I also added a second Chihuahua silhouette to the mix, which now totals out at more than 80 different silhouettes! Canine Carnival

This weekend, dog lovers in St. Louis can kick off the month of October by attending the 19th Annual Canine Carnival at Tilles Park in Ladue. Held on Sunday, October 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., this dog-friendly event is presented by the Animal Protective Association (APA) and will feature a pooch parade, pet fashion show, canine contests, APA adoptable dogs, children's activities and vendors. In addition, the Purina Incredible Dog Team will perform three shows. The event is FREE so bring your entire family (canines included!) out for some fun "where the dogs play the games and win the prizes." Ellen
